Acrylic ornaments are the most recent trend for Cricut crafters. After receiving many requests for a tutorial, I decided to experiment with different ways to make them! These DIY acrylic ornaments with gold gilding are one of four tutorials coming out over the next few days.

Making ornaments with your Cricut machine is one of my favorite things to craft at Christmas. I have made glitter-filled ball ornaments and arabesque tile ornament designs in past years, which are equally as fun and easy as our acrylic ornament craft today!

Let’s review the supplies to turn our clear acrylic Christmas disks into beautiful handmade gold acrylic ornaments!

Step 1: Apply Easytack adhesive spray to the acrylic ornaments.

An image shows Abbi's hands, holding an acrylic dick ornament and a Cricut weeding tool, removing the plastic film from the ornament.

First, peel off ONE side of the plastic film on your acrylic ornament.

Use your Easytack spray in a well-ventilated area to spritz the acrylic disks (do NOT soak them). Let the Easytack sit for 1-2 minutes before laying on the gold leaf sheets.

Step 2: Apply gold leaf sheets to the acrylic ornaments.

Carefully remove a couple of sheets of your gold leaf gilding and place them over the ornament. If you want your acrylic ornament to have some see-through crackling, then add fewer gold sheets/flakes.

Wearing clear vinyl gloves, Abbi applies sheets of gold leaf paper to the acrylic disk ornaments.

Gentle rub in a circular motion with your fingers to press and remove any excess gold leafing. Once you are happy with its look, give it about 5 minutes to set.

Step 3: Apply Mod Podge to seal gold leaf.

Using your spray mod podge, lightly spritz over the gold-pressed side of your acrylic ornament to seal on the gold leafing. Set the ornament aside and let it dry for at least 30 minutes.

Step 4: Cut the vinyl decals with your Cricut.

While your acrylic ornament is drying, cut out your vinyl decals on your Cricut machine. I am using the Cricut Maker 3 with permanent Smart Vinyl, but you can use any Cricut that works with Design Space to cut out vinyl on a mat as well.

You can create your own typography designs in Cricut Design Space, or you can use my templates available in my Freebie Vault! Scroll up to the supply section to login into our create a free account!

Once you have downloaded the free templates, import them into Design Space if you are new to Cricut, then see how to upload an SVG file here!

You will want to scale the Christmas SVG phrases to the size of your ornament. My disk ornaments are 4 inches wide, so I scaled the decal to about 3.5 inches, so there was some wiggle room on each side of the ornament.

Step 5: Weed the decals, and apply them to the acrylic ornaments.

Abbi is pictured weeding one of the vinly decals for the gilded gold acrylic ornaments. Three of the four Christmas ornaments are already completed.

Proceed to cut out your ornament vinyl decals, weed them, and then burnish them onto your transfer tape.

Abbi uses the Cricut scraper to thoroughly apply the vinyl decal to the front of a gold-gilded acrylic Christmas ornaments.

Hover your design over the center of the acrylic disk ornament until it looks centered, then press down. Use your Cricut scraper to burnish the design and remove the transfer tape.

String some ribbon or twine through the hole and hang it up to complete your ornament!
