This week I’ll be sharing with you a fun 3D hot air balloon paper craft that’s easy to make with a free hot air balloon template. This project is not only great for your kiddos but perfect for an easy DIY shower or party decor. I’ve always thought decorating a baby nursery with a hot air balloon theme would be cute. I think when my hubby and I get around to number 3, I just might do that. Alrighty, then, let’s get to the supplies.

How to Make Paper Hot Air Balloons

Two hands are pictured folding a pink piece of cardstock paper that has been cut into a circle.

Pick out some fun colors and cut out your balloons. I use 6, but you can use up to 8 if you want more colors in your balloon. Fold all of them in half down the middle.

Add glue to one side of the fold and stack the next balloon cut out on top. Continue doing this with all the pieces. You can watch the full-length tutorial below.

Instructions

  1. Download the hot air balloon templates from the Freebie Vault.
  2. Pick out your favorite cardstock colors and cut out the balloon templates. You should need 6-8 balloons.
  3. Fold the paper down the middle length-wise.
  4. Add glue to one side of the fold and stack the next balloon cut out on top. Continue this process with all the balloon cutouts.
  5. Before you close and glue together the paper to make the hot air balloon shape, add the string. Cut about a 20-inch length and glue into the center of the balloon. Loop the top end if you plan on hanging the air balloons.
  6. Next, add the "basket", which is made from three paper heart cutouts. Glue them together like you did the balloons, then attach them on the string.
  7. Trim the bottom of the string, then you're done!
