Want to learn how to make this adorable unicorn Valentine box? Here are all the steps you need to make a DIY kid’s unicorn or dinosaur valentine box with free templates.

Every year my kids get to create a DIY Valentine’s Day box for their class party. This year’s ideas included a unicorn valentine box for my daughter and a dinosaur valentine box for my son. I decided to share these valentine box ideas with you and provide free templates!

The templates I am sharing come with free SVG cut files so you can use your Cricut machine, or you can use my colored PDF printables to cut with scissors. If your kids are getting involved, make sure to have a pair of kid-friendly scissors for safety. If you are using a cutting machine like Cricut, I always let my kids help me load and unload the mat/materials, and they love helping that way!

Cricut Help – Unsure of how to upload SVG files to your Cricut? I have a step-by-step tutorial here!

This adorable unicorn Valentine box is perfect for Valentine's Day at school. The colorful unicorn has paper flowers and ribbons, a shiny gold horn, and rosy heart cheeks.

Unicorn Valentine Box Step-by-Step Instructions

For my Valentine boxes, I am using some 65-pound card stock and some glitter card stock for the unicorn. You may want to make additional decorative pieces like ears, eyes, rhinestones, extra sparkles, flowers, and a horn before you start.

Of course, I am using my Cricut cutting machine, but you can use scissors and hand-cut these projects if you want.

The Horn:

To make the unicorn’s horn, take a square piece of paper and roll it into a cone. Glue the cone together with hot glue so it dries quickly. I used gold glitter card stock. Next, glue the horn to the unicorn box. Use a hot glue gun to be sure the cone stays in place.

The Unicorn:

  1. Using the straight edge and a pencil, mark out a thin rectangular slot on the box for valentine envelopes and cards.
  2. Cut out the slot using your Exacto knife.
  3. Turn the box lid over once the slot is cut out and wrap it using the wrapping paper. I am using white for the unicorn, but you can use any color you choose. A fun way to get your kids involved is to let them choose colors or even paint the unicorn valentine box themselves.
  4. Use the Exacto knife to cut the extra wrapping paper from the slot so the slot remains open. Fold the excess wrapping paper under the slot and make sure everything is smooth. Use tape inside the box to keep the wrapping paper secure.
  5. Once the wrapping is over, it is time to start decorating! This is another great way to get your children to participate.
  6. Use hot glue or have your kids use the glue stick to apply all the decorations and facial features to the unicorn’s head.
  7. Add embellishments like flowers, ribbons, or rhinestones. Now you have an adorable, magical Valentine’s Day gift and card receptacle!

Dinosaur Valentine Box Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Gather all supplies and clear a space to work.
  2. Make sure all the dinosaur embellishments are prepped, glued together, and ready to go. You can use my free SVG templates for either the Cricut machine, or you can cut the embellishments out by hand using my colorful PDF free files. Helpful tips can be found in the dinosaur box video. Assembling the tail and other decorative additions is a great family project you and the kids can do together.
  3. Using a straight edge and a pencil, flip the box top upside down and mark out a rectangular envelope slot that will fit Valentine’s Day cards.
  4. Use your Exacto knife on a self-healing mat to cut out the slot.
  5. Once your slot is finished, you can either wrap the boxes in gift wrap or have your kids paint the valentine boxes. Make sure you re-open the envelope slot. I choose to wrap the box and the lid separately, cutting diagonal lines at the corners for easy wrapping and using clear tape to secure the wrapping paper inside the box so no one sees the tape.

Tip: I put something heavy in the box while cutting the wrapping paper around it so that the box doesn’t move around a lot.

  1. I used clear runner tape to tape down the edges on the outside of the smaller box, so you won’t be seeing any tape on the outside.
  2. Add the smaller box (the dinosaur’s head) to the bigger box on the short side. Try not to cover too much of the slot. Adults can use hot glue for a good hold.
  3. Hot glue the dinosaur embellishments onto the boxes. Now you have a dinosaur valentine box to collect all your kid’s Valentine’s Day goodies!
