Cricut Design Space Tips

A screenshot of seven Valentine's Day cupcake topper designs in Cricut Design Space includes two hearts with an arrow, a rose, a love letter with hearts, the word “Love,” a heart with wings, two bluebirds kissing with pink hearts, and “Love you.”

To get started, download the DIY cupcake topper SVG files in the Craft Vault (details above). Load the SVG files into Cricut Design Space. Learn how to upload your own SVG files to Cricut here.

A set of six white cupcakes in a triangle formation each has a different Valentine's Day cupcake topper made with a Cricut machine. The toppers are two hearts pierced by an arrow, a glittery rose and greenery, an open envelope with hearts, the word “Love,” a heart with wings, and the text “Love you.”

Next, scale the cupcake toppers to your desired size. In general, I recommend keeping them around 3 inches at the widest point. You can also use these designs to scale them larger and make a full-size cake topper with your Cricut.

Cut out your materials on your Cricut. I make the cupcake topper designs using cardstock and iron-on vinyl. I like to use the two bottom layers with cardstock and the topmost layer with glitter HTV.

Valentine’s Day Cupcake Topper Instructions

A nine-picture collage of Abbi Kirsten demonstrating the steps used to make DIY Valentine's Day cupcake toppers with Cricut.
  1. Cut out your cardstock and HTV layers with your Cricut.
  2. Glue together the cardstock layers first. I like to use Bearly Art glue.
  3. Weed your HTV and iron it onto the cardstock. I set my EasyPress mini to medium and pressed for 15-20 seconds. Let it cool, then remove the liner.
  4. Repeat this for all the Valentine’s cupcake toppers.
  5. Using a lollipop stick or toothpick, hot glue the stem to the back of the cupcake topper.
  6. You can either cut out an extra base piece of each design to cover the back using glue. Alternatively, opt to use a little washi tape which is what I do because you can remove this afterward, and your recipient can keep this design and use it to stick on a notebook, use it as a bookmark, etc.
  7. And that’s it! Stick your DIY cupcake toppers into a cupcake, and enjoy!

Valentine's Day DIY Cupcake Toppers

Active Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour
Difficulty: Easy

Spread a little love this Valentine's Day with these seven cupcake toppers! You can download the SVG files to use with your Cricut cutting machine and create love-inspired messages and images to bring your cupcakes to life. This craft is easy and quick and can be used for yourself, your kid’s Valentine's treat, Sweetest Day, or any time you want to show someone you care.

Instructions

  1. Download the Valentine’s Day DIY Cupcake Topper SVG files.
  2. Upload the SVG files into Design Space.
  3. Resize the toppers to your desired size - about 3” wide for cupcake toppers or much larger for a cake topper.
  4. Cut out all cardstock and iron-on vinyl pieces. Weed where needed.
  5. Use Bearly Art glue to adhere the cardstock pieces together.
  6. Use your Easy Press mini and add the vinyl to the cardstock. Set the Easy Press mini to medium and press for 15-20 seconds. Let cool before removing the vinyl liner.
  7. Hot glue the lollipop stick to the back of the cupcake topper. You can also use washi tape so the lollipop stick is removable, and the cupcake topper can be kept as a souvenir.
  8. If you are using hot glue to permanently adhere the lollipop stick to the cupcake topper, I recommend cutting an extra cardstock base to cover to hide the stick on the back.

Stick the DIY cupcake toppers into your delicious cupcakes, and voila! Extra love added!
