Craft Room Organization & Storage Ideas
Craft room organization is essential, yet sometimes very hard to accomplish. After all, being a crafty Creative doesn’t usually go hand in hand with neat and tidy! I have had some sort of a craft space ever since I started working as a crafter back in 2012.
From a dining room table to a cramped office nook, I have managed to make my ideas come to life in a small or disorganized space. BUT when I final got into a larger space in our new home – my craft loft, I discovered that I still felt cramped and dysfunctional in my work area.
My epiphany? If you don’t have a well-organized thought out craft space it doesn’t matter how big or small it is, your creativity may feel chaotic.
One of the biggest things I did in this challenge was to eliminate the unnecessary. I know as creative people that can be hard, but it helps make room for fresh and new ideas! The second thing I did was pick out some amazing craft storage units (this is key).
That’s why I decided to completely excavate my craft room, and you can too with my 3 Day Craft Room Revolution Challenge which I will tell you more about at the end! Keep reading for more pictures of my craft space and find out my favorite ways to organize!

Why You Need to Organize Your Craft Room
I know some of us (ahem me) will procrastinate when faced with the challenge to completely revolutionize their craft space. So before I show you my craft room organization before and after I want tell you what I discovered when I took the time to do this!
1. You will find inspiration
When I say find inspiration, I mean this metaphorically but also literally. There was so many buried supplies that I discovered in this clean out process. After buying supplies and tossing them in the closet, I totally had forgotten all the inspiring projects I have planned to make.
In addition to that, I also found myself brainstorming new projects with old or left over supplies, which I had totally abandoned to the glitter covered, twine knotted stuff bottom drawers of my space.
2. You will SAVE money
Organizing your craft room will TOTALLY SAVE YOU MONEY! Who else here plans a project and writes out what they need to buy at the craft store only to discover that you already had some of the supplies later on? Or maybe you know you have a supply on hand but you can’t manage to find it, so you just go buy more and thus increase your cluttered space.
And repeat…till we look like an episode of hoarders..
I know I’m not alone here ya’ll! So trust me, the time you need to take to clear this space will pay you back in craft supplies!
3. You will work more efficiently
Whether you are just a hobbyist or a craft business owner like myself, your efficiency will increase immensely when your craft room is organized. Not only will you save the time of not digging around looking for things, but you also will probably feel more productive without the noisy clutter when you are creating, and may even produce better projects because of it!
First Up: Craft Room Before and After
So what was my craft room like before? Kinda a cross between the Underside (from Stranger Things) meets the chaos of a Black Friday sale at Michael’s craft store! As much as I don’t want to share the before pictures here are a few for us to cry over together. 😉
To be fair, I did have a bunch of boxes for my new organizational storage in the way that normally weren’t present. Nevertheless still quite the mess!
Why yes, those are old blinds hanging from the 1980’s…
First Evolution: 2018 After Images
Alright, that was painful. Now let me show you what it looks like after my 3 days of organization!
Yes, I hear the angels singing too in this image. I decided I needed to create a clean clutter free work space (my desk), a photography space, ample storage space (which I obviously lacked before) AND a filming space for my face to face videos. Plus I added a colored accent wall in a shade of turquoise, which is one of my favorite colors and it really made the room pop!
Mission accomplished! Now when I am crafting I stand at my desk, where I have access to my Cricut (that box is my Cricut Maker that I still need to set up) as well as a pegboard with my commonly used tools and embellishments.
Second Evolution: 2021 After Images
Like I said, my craft space is ALWAYS changing. I wrote this post back in 2018 and have since updated lots of storage in my space. Take a look below and then keep reading for my favorite containers and resources!
MY FAVORITE CRAFT STORAGE IDEAS AND CONTAINER ORGANIZATION
1. Pegboard & Shelf Storage
My pegboard is quite easily one of my favorite editions. If you don’t have one I highly recommend getting one! It is a HUGE space saver. I bought mine at Ikea. You can also find this gorgeous white and aqua pegboard here!
Shelf Storage
Floating wood shelves are another perfect solution for utilizing wall space. I love to stack things like my paint organizer on my shelves near my pegboard.
2. Rolling Carts For Craft & Cricut Machine Storage
Rolling storage carts are perfect for small spaces when you need to move things around. My three favorite carts are Michaels Recollections Rolling Cart, their 4-drawer storage cart, and my Origami shelf and drawer cart from Home Shopping Network.
3. Drawers Storage for Cardstock and Paper Organization
My top two favorite ways to organize are with a 12 x 12 paper drawer container and with magazine holders for tabletop paper storage. I love my paper organizer! And I really love my rainbow one from Michaels Craft Store that I showed you in my video!
The drawer storage can also double as vinyl craft roll storage as well!
4. Rolling Wrapping Cart
Boy, do I love this wrapping cart! It stores all of my background paper for my photoshoots as well as 3 drawers full of any smaller supplies or for my case where I like to keep the extra camera and computer equipment!
5. Clear Stackable Containers and Decorative Storage Boxes
Whenever I add something to my closed cabinet storage I always place the smaller items into clear containers or photo boxes so the space stays neat and I can easily find items. These stackable square containers are one of my favorites to easily see what’s inside without needing to open them. Deflecto also has some amazing drawer storage like this one here.
Michaels Craft Store also has beautiful cardboard storage boxes a.k.a photo boxes. The prints on the boxes are determined by Michaels each season.
6. Iron-on and Vinyl Storage
I have gone through many methods of organizing my vinyl. Some smaller-scale solutions are using cart storage with drawers or these craft vinyl holders here that can be mounted on the wall.
Bookshelf for vinyl storage
For me, my vinyl stash has taken on a life of its own and I turned to using a bookshelf with these rectangle containers to make it super easy to find the type and color of vinyl I need. Be sure to also check out my label tutorial here and how I use the Cricut gold foil tool to decorate my labels.
7. Apothecary Jar Storage
Bell and apothecary jars are a wonderful way to store items like beads, tape, thread, etc while allowing your supplies to be visually appealing at the same time! These stackable bell jars are very pretty and practical as well as these more traditional jars that I like to use for ribbons. For keeping ribbon organized I use these wood spools.
8. Cricut Mat & Cutting Mat Storage
Mat storage! If you own a Cricut machine or even just have some self-healing cutting mats in your space you may want to think about how you store them efficiently. For me, I love to use heavy-duty command hooks to hand my mats on the wall – once again anything you can do to use a wall area is a huge advantage to saving space.
9. Craft Table – Make Your Own Craft Desk
Craft desks can be purchased ready-to-be-used such as this one here. I also love to build my own, which doesn’t have to be hard! For my sewing desk, I used two cube organizers from IKEA and a tabletop that my husband easily screwed together for the perfect table.

I can really make you feel good if I showed you my craft space. My hubby and I share a space and we have been adding to it and not organized much of it. But, he is retiring and we are moving so I have to pack up everything. So, thank you for your ideas . I will show you results when I get my new space.
