How To Make The Sunflower Basket Pop-Up Card With Cricut Step-by-Step Video Tutorial

Pop-up cards look difficult to make, but they are quite simple, just a lot of steps. To get the most comprehensive tutorial, click play on the video below. You can also keep reading for a high-level overview tutorial.

Design Space Set Up

  1. Join or log into the Abbi Kirsten Craft Vault to download this sunflower basket pop-up card design.
  2. Import the pop-up card SVG file into Cricut Design Space. Read a full step-by-step tutorial on how to upload your own SVG files to Cricut.
  3. I do not recommend scaling this card down, but you could scale it up a little if you have a large mat like the 12 x 24-inch mat.
How to set score lines for a pop up card in Cricut Design Space
  1. Ungroup the file and select the lines to change the Operation to Score – see the video for more details.
  2. Select both the base and scorelines and use the Attach tool at the bottom of the Layers Panel to hold the scorelines in place.
  3. Click on the Make It button and select the material, which, for me, is medium-weight cardstock.
  4. Load your cardstock onto the cutting mat and get each layer cut out.
  5. Cricut will prompt you to load your scoring wheel or stylus for the mats that have the scorelines attached.

Sunflower Card Assembly: Creating the Basket Base

Assembling sunflower pop up card
  1. Gather all your card layers and start by building the basket. Grab the two longest green pieces and fold them along the scorelines. Interlock each end of the two longest green pieces and fold the round tabs up.
How to assemble a sunflower pop up card
  1. Take the next two green pieces that have the 3 slots and two tabs at the base, and interlock these into the middle of the card with the 3 matching slots. See the video here for more clarification.
  1. Add in the final two green pieces in the remaining slots.
  2. Next, get the brown basket cover piece, fold along the scorelines, and fold the base tabs up.
  3. Add glue to the vertical tab and glue closed.
  1. Make sure the base tabs of the brown piece are folded out. Insert the green piece into the brown piece and make sure the two tab sets from the brown basket and green piece are overlapping at the bottom. Add glue between the two sets of tabs to hold the green and brown tabs together. See the video here for more help.
  2. Practice opening and closing the basket to make sure the mechanics are working properly.

Adding the sunflower basket to the card

  1. Fold the inside piece of the card with the two-slot cutout down the center of the scoreline.
  2. Insert the basket tabs into the slots of the card insert and secure them with glue.
  3. Add in the two yellow squares to the inside of the card covered with glue.
  4. Once dried, glue the entire card insert piece with the basket now attached to the inside of the main card cover.

Decorating the card with sunflowers

  1. To finish your sunflower pop-up card, work on adding all the sunflower petals to the basket.
  2. Use two sunflower layers to glue onto a green stem, sandwiching the greenery in between and adding the brown center or either side.
Note: For a more natural-looking sunflower, aim to alternate the petal points when you glue the two sunflower petals back to back.
  1. Repeat this until you have added all the sunflower pieces. Don’t worry about making it perfect!
  2. Open and close the card a few times, and the card will pop-up flowers from the basket. This fun paper craft is fun to make and can be customized for any special occasion.

What about envelopes?

For handmade pop-up cards, envelopes can pose a challenge at times. It is not uncommon for some edges of the pop-up elements to slightly stick out of the card. I like to use a pretty ribbon or twine to tie the card shut like a gift, then slide it into the top of my gift bag or box for the recipient to open! If you are mailing this, I recommend tying it with a ribbon and sliding it into a cardboard envelope for maximum protection.
