With so many decorative fonts to choose from, below are some practical points to consider in selecting, pairing, and uploading fonts that will ensure your success.
How to Select the Best Christmas Fonts for Cricut Projects
How can you know if the Christmas font you’re about to select for your Christmas project will work well with Cricut Design Space? As a general rule, the best fonts for cutting are relatively smooth and have a consistent line weight. The tips below will help to ensure you’re choosing a suitable font.
- File type: Ensure the font you want to download is either a TrueType Font (.ttf) or OpenType Font (.otf), as these are compatible with Design Space. (OTF files often contain more special characters and symbols.)
- Design intricacy: Avoid fonts with small, fine details. Intricate fonts can be difficult for your Cricut machine to cut, especially at small sizes, which can lead to tearing or poor results.
- Line thickness: A font with a relatively even and robust line thickness will cut much more cleanly than one with thin strokes. For script fonts, choose those with thicker connections between letters for easier cutting and weeding.
- Font preview: Before you download, most font websites allow you to type in custom text to see how the font will look. This helps you check for clean outlines and proper spacing.
How to Make the Best Christmas Font Pairings
A common design principle for font pairing is to combine a decorative/script font with a clean, simple sans-serif or serif font. This creates contrast and ensures the design is legible, which is especially important for cutting machines like Cricut. For example, in this post, the Christmas Wish Calligraphy (script/decorative) font pairs well with Clean Christmas Font (simple sans-serif).
How to Upload Your Fonts to Cricut and Use Special Characters
So, once you find those favorite Christmas fonts you want to use in your holiday crafting, how do you get them into Design Space and make them part of your font library?
To help you, I’ve created a step-by-step guide on how to upload new fonts into Cricut that includes:
