Mermaid Gift Bags For An “Under The Sea” Birthday
When my daughter Ella was three, she wanted a mermaid-themed birthday. This desire led to weeks of party ideas and “under the sea” inspiration, including this quick DIY mermaid gift bag project! They are so simple to make, and I’ve also included a couple of Freebies!
Goodie bags are a great way to show appreciation to your guests and add to your themed party. Party favors are great for a kid’s birthday because all the children will get a little present or two, which makes them feel included in the fun. You can fill these bags with anything you want and keep the mermaid party favors on theme, too. DIY mermaid party favor ideas include:
- Crazy straws
- Printable mermaid designs to color
- A small pack of crayons
- Sea snack bags
- Candy
- Little Mermaid erasers and pencils
- Printed themed word searches or another fun party activity
- On-theme stickers or slap bracelets
I’ve teamed up with Press Print Party to create this enchanting mermaid-themed party. I’ve posted the full party details and links to all the fantastic shops that helped contribute to the final look! Additional “under-the-sea” party ideas and party supplies are:

- Tissue paper or tulle (optional)
- Hole punch (optional for gift tag)

How To Make DIY Mermaid Gift Bags [Video Tutorial]
Watch this five-minute video to see how I arranged the gift bag together. Oh, and a side note: I didn’t have any tissue paper, so I used tulle to stuff inside the top of the bag. Turns out this is a really cool alternative!
DIY Mermaid Gift Bags Step-By-Step Instructions
- Step 1: Gather all your supplies and prepare a clean workspace.
- Step 2: Cut out the printables for the mermaid tail, seaweed, starfish, and shells. If desired, cut out a large shell or starfish to use as a gift tag.
- Step 3: Glue the cut-outs and any other elements to the front of your gift bag. I usually start with the mermaid tail, then the seaweed, and finish with the starfish and shells.
- Step 4: Decorate your cut-outs. For example, add rhinestones to your mermaid tail.
- Step 5: Add the party favors, tissue paper, or tulle (optional)
- Step 6: Use the hole-punch and twine to attach the gift tag to the top of the bag (optional).
Your DIY mermaid gift bags are finished and ready for your party guests!
