Decorative Tinsel Christmas Tree Letters
As the years have gone by, I have always tried to create something unique each year at the holidays, especially on the Christmas tree. In my home this year I started a new tradition where we have our main family Christmas tree AND a smaller colorful tree filled with handmade craft ornaments or adornments in the dining room. Although I will admit, I carried the theme elsewhere.Â
I made my large, vibrant paper ornaments this year for my white tree, then resolved it needed a little extra punch with some decorative tinsel Christmas tree letters. I decided to spell out a holiday phrase, Falala!
This craft is extremely easy to make and can be customized to your preferred colors and style.
Supplies for Decorative Tinsel Christmas Tree Letters
- Cardboard letters to spell out your choice words (I chose Fa La La, but you can also do, deck the halls, Merry Christmas, let it snow, believe, etc. Letters can be found at craft stores.)
- Craft paint in choice colors (spray paint works too.)
- Paint or foam brushes
- Tinsel (I used a thin tinsel here, but you could go bigger if you like. I bought mine at Hobby Lobby).
- Glue gun
- Additional ribbon (optional)
How To Make Decorative Tinsel Christmas Tree Letters
Step 1
The first step is to choose your paint colors and paint all the letters. You can totally make this more traditional if you’re not into crushing on bright colors like me. 🙂
Make sure to let everything thoroughly dry before moving on. Spray paint is a quick great option to use as well. I used craft paint only because I had a bunch on hand.
Step 2
This part is optional. The letters will likely easily rest on your tree branches but some may want them more secure. You can accomplish this by gluing a small ribbon loop onto the back of the letter near the top. The loop will now allow you to hang it on the tree!
Step 3
Add glue to the outer edge of the letters and shape your tinsel garland around each one, framing the letters.
Keep going till it meets the starting point of your tinsel and finish it off.

Now go arrange them on your tree! I use fairly large letters here, which works with my word, falala, but if you are making longer words, you may want to find some smaller cardboard letters.
