New Cricut Maker Tools
Yesterday Cricut announced it’s brand new set of tools that adapt to the Cricut Maker! These brand new tools are apart of the ingenious QuickSwap housing that Cricut promised more of for the Maker machine. If you own the scoring wheel that works with the Maker this is the housing you will use with these new Cricut Maker tools.
So why are these tools so exciting? Well first, they unlock a brand new level of crafting abilities which include engraving, perforating, debossing (recessed relief images and designs in paper and other materials) and creating wavy edges.
These new tools will be available beginning July 16 exclusively on the Home Shopping Network and soon after on Cricut’s website.
As soon as I get my hands on these I will be creating video tutorials to show how to use them and an in-depth understanding inside my course Cutting Edge Crafters for all my students!
Cricut is also doing a Christmas in July sale right now so if you were planning to grab a Maker soon I highly recommend doing that now!
Not sure if the Maker is for you? I can help with that here.
Back to the new exciting tools. Let’s talk about each one below!
Cricut Maker Perforating Tool
Let’s start with what the perforating tool because this is something that Cricut crafters have been asking for years to have.
The new Cricut perforating tool can create easy to tear edges on materials like paper and cardstock. I think this is amazing because you can add this to so many projects at points that you might get stuck using tape or glue – you can now create a perforated edge that is clean looking and easy to grab and tear when ready to open. This new Cricut tool will work great with candy boxes, envelopes, tickets, chore charts and more!
The perforation tool will be $44.99 for both the blade tool and housing, or $24.99 for just the tip. Find the Basic Perforation Blade + QuickSwap™ Housing here.
Cricut Maker Engraving Tool
This new engraving tool will allow you to engrave on flat metal surfaces. It also will allow you to engrave on leather and paper! This will be especially wonderful for jewelry makers or wall art.
The Cricut engraving tool cost will be $44.99 the tip and housing, or $24.99 for just the tip. View the Engraving Tip + QuickSwap™ Housing here.
Cricut Maker Embossing Tool
The embossing tool is actually a tool that can create two effects in one – embossing or debossing.
Embossing is the process of creating a raised design image on paper and other materials against a raised background, while debossing is a recessed relief image and is sunken into the surface of the material.
Embossing or debossing can be beautiful with patterns, florals, seals and more. I think I already see some paper flower tutorials with embossed petals on the way to the blog! The debossing tool will be $44.99 for both the tip and housing, or $24.99 for just the tip. Find the Fine Debossing Tip + QuickSwap™ Housing here
Cricut Wavy Edge Tool
The wavy tip tool will allow you to quickly add decorative scallop edging to any popular project material like vinyl, paper and more. While this tool is probably the least exciting of the bunch (in my personal opinion) I am exciting to see what unique and clever tricks I can discover with this tool in the future. The wavy tool will be $49.99 for the tip and housing, or $29.99 for just the tip. Find the Wavy Blade + QuickSwap™ Housing here.
What this means for Explore owners
One of the biggest questions going around since the announcement is why can’t these tools work with the Explore?
Here is the direct statement from the desk of the Cricut CEO:
“Dear Cricut Members
I wanted to shed light on two important themes that I am seeing in various discussions today.
Why are these new Maker tools not for Explore Air2?
The Maker was designed almost 4-5 years after Air2. It was designed with the Adaptive Tool System, a Rotational gear (needed for some of the tools) and 4kg of force. Unfortunately the Explore machines do not have some of these features and hence we could not launch some of these tools for Explore. That does not mean we don’t LOVE Explore users. There is tons of improvements we are making for Design Space and Content offerings that benefit all our members – which brings me to my point below.
Why did we not announce improvements to Design Space today?
We have approx 100 amazing software engineers working on Design Space and we are making tons of improvements to it. We are busy working on the Offline version of the software which was the biggest feature our members had requested for in addition to lots of other features and improvements.
We LOVE all our members and all our machines. Our goal is to always keep improving and always keep innovating. Even if we are not ready to invest in new technology today, it is good for us as creative members and crafters and for our industry to keep moving the industry and the technology forward. It fosters imagination and creativity that we all ❤️
Thank you for being a Cricut member and thank you all for your support.”
Ashish Arora (Cricut CEO)
While I totally understand that this may be a little frustrating for Explore users, it is important to note that the company clearly stated the Maker machines would be the machine that expands with more capabilities when they released it. And even though the Maker costs more, I have never met a single Cricut crafter yet who says they regret buying the Maker over the Explore.
